Why should the student sign
a FERPA release form?
The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act
of 1974 (or FERPA) is a federal law designed to protect the privacy
of the student educational records. The FERPA law also applies to the
student financial records. In accordance with FERPA, Fees and Deposits
is required to have the student's permission in order to release fee
account information. If a parent/guardian/spouse etc. were to contact
our office with questions regarding the student fee account, without
a FERPA release on file, only directory information will be released.
Examples of directory information:
- Name
- Address
- Telephone (local and home)
- Program of Study
- Enrollment Status
Examples of Specific Account Information
(information that without a FERPA will
not be released)
- Account Balance
- Payment History
- Specific Charge Information
Other University Offices may release:
- Dates of attendance
- Previous educational agencies or institutions attended.
- Participation in officially recognized activities and
sports
