Loan repayment begins at the conclusion of the grace period for each loan. The grace period is a period of time after borrowers graduate, leave school or drop below half-time enrollment when they are not required to make payments. The total amount of the loan, plus accrued interest and any collection costs must be repaid.
All loan payments are due on the 25th of each month.

If you are unable to repay your loan, there are a variety of options available to you depending on the type of loan(s). Please review the options below:
Loan Consolidation (available on all loans except University Loans and Primary Care Loans)
Direct Consolidation Loans allow borrowers to combine one or more of their Federal loans into a new loan that offers several advantages. A consolidation loan may ease the strain on a borrower’s budget by lowering the borrower’s overall monthly payment.
There are several ways that a borrower can apply for a Direct Consolidation Loan:
Deferment
Deferment is a temporary postponement of payments for borrowers during which time interest does not accrue. A borrower must request deferment and provide The Ohio State University with the required documentation.

Forbearance (excludes University Loans)
Forbearance is a temporary postponement of payments for borrowers who find they are experiencing a financial hardship, poor health, or other extraordinary circumstance. Interest continues to accrue on your loan.

Cancellation (Perkins Loans are eligible)
Cancellation of part or all of a loan is available on Perkins loans where a borrower is employed in selected fields. Please refer to your promissory note or go on-line to http://studentaid.ed.gov/repay-loans/forgiveness-cancellation/charts to view the Federal Perkins Loan Cancellation and Discharge Summary Chart.
To request a Perkins cancellation, please contact ECSI’s Customer Service at (888) 549-3274 or going online to http://borrower.ecsi.net and choosing the DOWNLOAD FORMS button. Click on The Ohio State University option and follow the instructions for completing the Request for Deferment / Cancellation form and then choosing the appropriate form for your employment type.
Rehabilitation (Perkins Loans and Long- Term University Loans are eligible)
Rehabilitation is an option that a borrower may request to assist in bringing a loan current. Eligible borrowers must request rehabilitation. Loan rehabilitation is achieved by making nine consecutive, on-time payments. After successfully completing the nine consecutive payments, the borrower will again be eligible for all remaining benefits from the original promissory note. In addition, the default will be removed from the borrower’s credit bureau report.

Discharge (All loans except University Loans)
Total and Permanent Disability Discharge: a borrower may be eligible for a Total and Permanent Disability (TPD) Discharge on your Federal Perkins loan if you are unable to engage in any substantial gainful activity because a medically determinable physical or mental impairment that: can be expected to result in death; has lasted for a continuous period of not less than 60 months, or can be expected to last for a continuous period of not less than 60 months.
